Instructions for your New Retainers

When your braces are removed, you will wear a retaining appliance to hold teeth in position. Retainers are just as important as braces in the treatment plan.

You must wear your retainer full time for the first year (with the exception of eating, brushing, and active sports).  Then, retainers should be worn every night for as long as you want your teeth to remain straight.

When you are not wearing your retainers, they must always be kept in your retainer case.

Be sure to keep your retainers away from heat and direct sunlight, such as a hot car, because this can cause the retainer plastic to distort.

Hawley retainers

  1. Always keep your retainer moist by wrapping it in a wet paper towel in the retainer case when it is not being worn.
  2. Brush your retainer with toothpaste and toothbrush each time you brush your teeth.
  3. Keep your retainers out of reach of dogs and cats.
  4. Do not eat with your retainers in your mouth.  Take them out to eat.  You may drink liquids with your retainers in your mouth.

Essix (Clear) retainers

  1. Do not eat with your retainers in your mouth.  Take them out to eat and drink.  You may drink only water with them in your mouth otherwise the retainers will permanently discolor.
  2. Your retainers should be rinsed with toothbrush and COLD water to clean, NEVER HOT. DO NOT USE TOOTHPASTE TO CLEAN THEM. This will strip the brilliance from them. The retainers will no longer look as nice in your mouth. If need be, use an over the counter retainer cleaner to soak them.
  3. Keep your retainers out of reach of dogs and cats.
IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH YOUR RETAINERS PLEASE CALL OUR OFFICE FOR AN EMERGENCY APPOINTMENT RIGHT AWAY.  Even a few days without your retainers can cause your teeth to shift and relapse.
